How to Prepare Your Dog for Grooming

Many owners wonder why their dog seems anxious before or during grooming. The truth is that, just like with people, grooming can be a new and sometimes intimidating experience — especially if you didn’t start early.

Start Early

The sooner you familiarise a puppy with touch, grooming tools, and sounds (hair dryers, clippers), the more relaxed it will be as an adult dog. Begin with short and pleasant experiences: touch the paws, ears and muzzle, and reward with treats.

Brushing at Home

Regular brushing at home — even just a few minutes every day — makes a huge difference. Beyond coat health, your dog gets used to physical contact and learns to relax during handling.

Calm Before the Visit

A short walk before a grooming appointment helps your dog release energy and arrive calmer. Avoid large meals right beforehand to prevent discomfort.

Choose a Groomer Who Cares

The right groomer makes the biggest difference. Look for someone who takes their time, lets the dog get used to the space, and never rushes.
