The Basics of Dog Training
Training a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences a pet owner can have. Beyond commands, you’re building a shared language with a living creature that genuinely wants to please you.
Positive Reinforcement: The Only Method
Modern behavioural science is clear: positive reinforcement methods (rewarding what you want repeated) are more effective and more ethical than punitive techniques. Your dog learns faster, without stress, and without risking the bond between you.
Consistency is Key
A dog cannot understand that something is allowed sometimes and not others. If you don’t want your dog on the sofa, that rule must apply always — even when they look adorable.
Short, Frequent Sessions
Dogs learn best in short sessions of 5–10 minutes, several times a day. Avoid long marathon training sessions that tire both the dog and the owner.
Learn to Read Body Language
A dog that licks its lips, yawns, or looks away is telling you it’s feeling pressured. Learn to recognise these calming signals and give space when needed.
Patience is a Virtue
Every dog has its own pace. Don’t compare your dog to others. Celebrate every small step forward.
